Born and raised in Wisconsin, Big Al Dorn has gained a reputation as a true bonafide legend in the blues scene. He has developed an extremely powerful and distinctive sound on the harmonica, drawing comparisons to the greats of the genre such as "Big" Walter Horton. His guitar playing skills are also highly regarded, making him one of Wisconsin's premier musicians in both instruments.

With solid and well-performed performances, Big Al has won over fans and fellow musicians alike. Brandon Santini became an instant fan upon hearing him and praised him as a "Super Killer Harp Player" and a "Helluva Nice Guy". Jim Liban has called for more "REAL Blues harmonica and guitar Players" like him. Alligator Records' Bruce Iglauer has described his music as "an enjoyable listen", while Chris Kalmbach of The Madison Isthmus Times has been impressed with his "full bore harmonica sound". Robert Jr. Whitall of Big City Rhythm & Blues Magazine has hailed him as one of Wisconsin's premier harmonica and guitar players.
